Diigo http://www.diigo.com/help/why_diigo  (Mary Bullard)  After downloading the toolbar or adding to favorites, you can highlight notetake, send pieces of web pages…nice for research or just remembering where you found good stuff.  Highlight, Clip and Sticky-Note any webpage just as you would on paper. Play video clips or flash files from a variety of sources. Make them private or public. Interact on any webpage! Share your online findings with your friends and colleagues as lists, blogs, albums, feeds, or via email. Collect and compile your research findings with your group. Allow groups to collaborate on research or web design. Flash tutorials online and a user forum provide support. See this page, http://www.diigo.com/help/why_diigo, for an overview of features. May involve a bit of a learning curve before you are able to use all of the tools.

Web-Based File Conversion

Zamzar - http://www.zamzar.com  - offers file conversion for documents, images, videos, plus URL conversion from YouTube and Teachertube.  Mary Bullard adds: "While YouTube is blocked on our network for some very good reasons, you can still use the appropriate clips by going to the above site at home…put in the YouTube clip url and zamzar converts the clip to an avi or wmv file that can be burned on a CD or put on a flash drive.  Very easy…FREE."

Cutepdf - http://www.cutepdf.com/ - Download this program for free and use it in lieu of Adobe Acrobat to create pdf documents. Icon will appear in your printer panel. To create the pdf, click on the print command, select cutepdf, and print. You don't end up with a printed document but rather a pdf of your document which you can then print if you wish.

Jing Project - http://www.jingproject.com/ (Mary Bullard) Very interesting (free from Techsmith in beta) way to share directions (or other images, screen shots etc ) on your teacher web page.  You are a mini-producer! The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere. It’s something we want to give you, along with some online media hosting, to see how you use it. The project will eventually turn into something else. http://www.jingproject.com/ (Jane) I tried out Jing and found it amazingly simple to use. It's perfect to help someone navigate a web page or software menu. Here's a quick example which takes literally 1 minutes to create. The only downside I can see is that thereis no embed code, so you would need to paste or email a link to the Jingcast. - http://www.screencast.com/users/MI-LIFE/folders/Jing/media/fc9e930e-4d78-494b-b2a5-53405a7d1f50

new  vozMe -  http://vozme.com/index.php?lang=en    Check out this tool recommended by Mary Bullard. Type in the box and the text is converted to speech (including Spanish or Italian)!  You can download the mp3 right away. It a dull male monotone, but it's your words. Note from Jane: this site does not translate English to Italian/Spanish or vice versa. It does voice to text in those three languages. (The male voice seems to be that of an Irishman!)

new CoverItLive - http://www.coveritlive.com - Liveblogging with this free software streams your remarks live onto your web pages or blog so your readers hear from your immediately and permits others with access to ask questions. Very simple to use; provides embed code for your Protopage, wiki, or website. (Jane P.)

Comments on Web 2.0

Mary Bullard: (joining us electronically)   I keep several web pages with Best of the Best listed in categories…I send info to my teachers and then 6 mos later they ask “what was that site you told me about…”  I try lots of things but I am on password/login overload…every time I register I have to come up with a new set of words. I can’t keep up with delicious or flickr.  I was overwhelmed by Feedburner – I selected way too many cool RSS feeds.  I have a languishing Ning site, an edublog site and a google site – no time to do it all.

You may find that following all the social networking sites you are involved with gets very time-consuming and before you know it, you've blown a couple of hours. I just came across Beth Kanter's blog posting on avoiding procrastination with social networking which you'll enjoy. --Jane

This is still "early days" but the concept is similar to paypal - you register once - provide your data to OpenID and then can use your logon/pw at all sites that require registration. This would be great for all the little open source trials I sign up for...no more wondering if the site is secure and no more forgetting who I am;)
